Breaking at the Cracks

I.

It’s not a dream.

It’s actually happening.

You see it all. You blink, dozen times. But it’s still there.

II.

The dark.

The tunnel.

The absence of light of the end of the tunnel.

You blink, dozen times but it’s still there.

III.

The bridge.

The match.

The bridge to burn.

You blink, dozen times but it’s still there.

IV.

The danger signs.

The red of the traffic light blinking rapidly.

You suddenly remember how many yellow lights you’ve ignored.

It hit you.

It’s not a dream.

It’s happening.

You blink, dozen times but it’s still there.

V.

It’s actually happening.

You know how this plays out.

The cracks on the wall.

The holes of the tire.

The long, annoying screeching of sneakers against hardwood.

The constant ringing.

You blink, dozen times but it’s still there.

VI.

You’ve seen this all before.

That moment before hitting the unknown.

You brace yourself for the impact.

But you know for sure.

No matter how ready you think you are,

No one’s ever ready for breaking apart.
