Best things to do in Oahu, Hawaii with kids

When it comes to family vacations, our family enjoys discovering new cities as well as finding time to relax and be in the moment. Before this trip, we were searching for a place that offered both options. Finding the perfect balance between island tranquility and city excitement was a challenge. However, our recent family trip to Oahu proved to be the ideal blend of both worlds, offering a variety of activities that were enjoyed both by our kids and us parents. Hawaii became a place after my own heart, and I would highly recommend it as a great vacation destination for families. Especially families who are looking for a paradise type vacation with some adventure.  The island is characterized by lush mountains, beautiful beaches, and a central plain where the capital city, Honolulu, is located. Here are some of the best things to do in Oahu with kids.

Best time to visit Oahu:

Hawaii, with its stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant culture, is a year-round destination that welcomes travelers from around the world. Choosing the best time to visit Hawaii ultimately depends on personal preferences and priorities. Whether you prefer the quieter shoulder seasons, the lively summer atmosphere, or the whale-filled waters of winter, Hawaii offers a paradise for every season.

Need a Car in Oahu?

While public transportation is available, renting a car on the island offers unparalleled freedom and flexibility. Oahu is just one of the beautiful Hawaiian Islands, and having a rental car makes it convenient to explore neighboring attractions. Whether it’s a day trip to the North Shore, a visit to the Dole Plantation, or a scenic drive along the coastline, having a car allows you to easily hop from one destination to another without being constrained by fixed schedules.

Drive along the Hanauma Bay Scenic Drive, the Windward Coast, or the iconic H-3 Highway for panoramic views of the island’s natural beauty. Stop at viewpoints, take photos, and soak in the stunning landscapes at your leisure.

Hotel: Hyatt Regency Waikiki

One of the standout features of the Hyatt Regency Waikiki is its prime location. Situated just steps away from the iconic Waikiki Beach, we had the privilege of waking up to the soothing sounds of the ocean and enjoying panoramic views of the Pacific. The convenience of being within walking distance of renowned attractions, shops, and restaurants added an extra layer of luxury to our stay. In the evenings, enjoy live entertainment that captures the essence of Hawaii, creating an atmosphere of celebration and joy.

For those seeking adventure, the Hyatt Regency offers easy access to a variety of water activities. Whether it’s surfing lessons, paddleboarding, or a relaxing catamaran cruise, the hotel’s concierge can arrange unforgettable experiences to make your stay even more memorable.

Pearl Harbor:

A visit to Oahu would be incomplete without paying respects to the historic Pearl Harbor. Explore the USS Arizona Memorial and the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, where you can learn about the events of December 7, 1941, and the impact on the course of history. The somber yet essential experience is a reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II. Our family found the exhibits to be both moving and informative.

 USS Arizona Memorial:

Continuing our exploration of Oahu’s historical landmarks, the USS Arizona Memorial is a must-visit. This solemn tribute commemorates the lives lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor and offers a poignant reflection on the events that shaped the course of World War II.

Whether it’s swimming, surfing, or simply building sandcastles, Waikiki Beach has something for everyone. We spent almost everyday at the beach. Packed our spam masubi from the ABC stores and spent most of the day there. We found that calmer, safer waters, were by the section with the rock lagoon.

International Market Place:

Indulge in a shopping spree at the International Market Place, a bustling hub of retail therapy and culinary delights. From local crafts to international brands, the marketplace offers a diverse array of products. After shopping, savor the flavors of Oahu at one of the many restaurants and eateries. Our family found this marketplace to be a vibrant hub of activity.

Dole Plantation:

Venture into the heart of Oahu’s agricultural history at the Dole Plantation. Discover the pineapple maze, take a scenic train ride through the plantation, and indulge in delicious pineapple treats. It’s a sweet escape into the island’s agricultural roots.
