Niagara Falls, a natural wonder that lays on the border between the United States and Canada, is not only a breathtaking sight but also a fantastic destination for a family getaway. Before our visit to Niagara, we were aware of the on going debate about which side is better to visit. One thing that I enjoy about travelling is that places and experiences will surprise you. Our family was truly surprised by the wonderful things the NY side of Niagara has to offer and the beauty of this natural wonder can definitely not be beat. While the Canadian side might be more famous, the American side of Niagara Falls offers its own set of mesmerizing experiences for families with kids. I would like to share some of our family’s experience and favorites during our visit.
Hotel Stay:
Hyatt Place Niagara Falls. It was comfortable and convinient. Right outside almost all the activities.
1. Maid of the Mist:.
One of the most iconic experiences at Niagara Falls is the Maid of the Mist boat tour. Decked out in blue rain ponchos, families can get up close and personal with the powerful falls of Niagara. The mist, the roar of the falls, and the total magnitude of the natural wonder makes this a thrilling adventure for kids and adults alike. When they say get close and personal to the falls, they are not lying! It was one of the most beautiful experiencing to hear the roar of the falls. Don’t let the lying going on the attraction discourage you, it moves pretty fast.
2. Observation Deck: Elevate your Niagara Falls experience by visiting an observation deck. The observation deck provides a bird’s eye view of the falls and the surrounding landscape. Kids will be fascinated by the panoramic scenery. It is included with the Maid of the Mist admission, otherwise tickets are less than $5 per person. (Check website for current pricing). Definitely do not miss this part of the attraction. You get up close and person with the falls.
3. Cave of the Winds:
For an exhilarating encounter with the falls, don’t miss the Cave of the Winds experience. Geared with special sandals and a poncho, families can venture onto wooden walkways that take you right next to the Bridal Veil Falls. The power of the Falls water is an unforgettable feeling. Our family opted to do the evening time to watch the beautiful colors of the lights on the falls. We are so glad we did! We thought we were close to the falls with Maid of the Mist; not at all. Cave of the Winds brings you so close that you stand right underneath the falls, and are pretty much drenched by them. It is worth it. It is even hard for me to explain the experience. You just have to do it for yourself.
4. Niagara Falls State Park:
Explore the beauty of Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in the United States. We enjoyed leisurely taking a stroll along the scenic paths. It is great to have a picnic with a view, and let the kids enjoy the playgrounds. The park also hosts seasonal events, so check the calendar for any special activities during your visit so that you dont miss out!
5. Goat Island:
Take a scenic stroll through Goat Island, situated in the middle of Niagara Falls. This tranquil oasis offers breathtaking views of the falls and provides a natural playground for kids. The walking paths, lush greenery, and proximity to the falls make Goat Island a peaceful yet exciting family-friendly destination. Be sure to go around the night time to trully see this world wonder. It is also a great spot to get a sneak people of how the falls might be looking from the Canada side of things.
6. Niagara Falls Trolley:
Make exploring the area even more convenient with the Niagara Falls Trolley. Hop on and off at various attractions, including Goat Island and Niagara Falls State Park. The trolley is not only a practical mode of transportation but also a fun way for kids to see the sights without getting tired. I love that Niagara has this option. There is a lot of walking at the state park depending on what activities one has planned. It allows for some rest throughout the day.
7. Niagara Gorge Discovery Center: Combine education with fun at the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center. Interactive exhibits and hands-on displays teach children about the geology and history of the falls. The center also offers guided walks and nature programs that provide a deeper understanding of the local environment.
8. Old Fort Niagara:
For families interested in history, a visit to Old Fort Niagara is a must. Our family enjoy finding historical attractions on our travel because it gives the whole family an opportunity to continue learning about the world. Located near the mouth of the Niagara River, this historic site allows kids to step back in time and experience military life in the 18th century. The fort features reenactments and educational programs suitable for all ages.
9. Aquarium of Niagara:
Discover the fascinating marine life of the Great Lakes at the Aquarium of Niagara. With interactive exhibits and daily sea lion shows, this aquarium offers a delightful underwater adventure for children. It’s both entertaining and educational, making it a perfect family destination.
10. Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours:
Brace yourselves for an unforgettable adventure with Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours. Take a thrilling ride on the Niagara River, experiencing the power of Class V whitewater rapids. With specially designed jet boats, this heart-pounding experience is sure to be a highlight of your family trip, providing excitement and a refreshing splash of adrenaline. They do offer an option that is closed off, but where is the fun in that? This one truly one of the best experiences for our family. We could have gone 10 times without batting an eye. It is a must. It is in Buffalo, about half an hour from Niagara State Park. We took an uber. Definitely check with bus schedules because it looked like there is a bus stop from the State Park right but this facility. And the bus was supposed to be free.
11. Niagara Falls Fireworks:
End your day with a magical trip by experiencing the Niagara Falls fireworks. The illuminated night sky above the falls is simply beautiful, and the vibrant colors reflected on the water create a mesmerizing view for the whole family. Check the schedule for the fireworks display during your visit. This was a great end to our trip. The firework show is just spectacular and not to be missed.
Food Options:
Anchor Bar: Known as the birthplace of the Buffalo wing, Anchor Bar offers a casual atmosphere and delicious wings. If you’re a fan of spicy and flavorful chicken wings, this iconic eatery is a must-visit.
Griffon:
Right next to Whirlpool Jet Boat tours. Enjoy this scenic restaurant. They even have live bands playing, The view from the restaurant could not be beat. The restaurant was very kid friendly as well.
Food Trucks:
Right outside the State Park, you will find various options for food trucks. This was a very convinient option. The lines could be long, so make sure you are going non peak hours.
